MILL WHEEL RESTORATION PROGRESS REPORT:
In January we reported we are in need of your generous giving! The Friends of Beaver Creek State Park Pioneer Village, a 501c3 all volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation of the Pioneer Village, is completely restoring the water powered Gaston's Mill water wheel. We are pleased to report we were able to find a skilled carpenter capable of building a new water wheel for The Gaston's Mill and we signed a contract for the work to be completed by mid April. We have been diligently fund raising and as of March 31 we had accumulated $17,000.00 toward the $29,850.00 total bill. By carefully removing the old 1989 boards and rims ourselves we were able to reduce the total cost to $28,850.00. We saved as many boards as possible for the creation of coat racks and picture frames as well as other memorabilia which will have a special Gaston’s Mill stamp and be for sale in our trading post.
The Gaston’s Mill, built in the 1830’s, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the few operating historic water driven grist mills in Ohio. Not only does it provide the Friends of Beaver Creek State Park with on site ground flours for fund raising through sales and ingredients for our pancake breakfasts, but especially when in operation, it is one of the main attractions of the pioneer village and the park. The only working part of the water wheel which did not require replacement was the wheel shaft. All other sections including all of the buckets/troughs, spokes, inside barrel boards, outer and bottom bucket boards, and the rims need to be replaced with white oak before the mill can be operated.
Although the wheel is in the process of being replaced we must have all of the funds by July 1, 2015. We have made a down payment, an additional payment is due upon the new wheel successfully installed and the final payment is due by July 1, 2015.
We will happily accept your donation for the mill wheel repair if you send your check or money order to:
Friends of Beaver Creek State Park, PO Box 2063, East Liverpool, OH 43920.
We have a GoFundMe account and it is also possible to utilize PayPal. (Our paypal address is email@example.com).
We greatly appreciate your support as we preserve an historic building in our tri-county area.

The origin of many photographs can not be documented. It believed that Foster Shattuck, a past Columbiana County Forest and Parks Council volunteer, is the source for many of the older photographs that were used in press releases, park brochures and educational materials. Other photographs were taken by Penn State Beaver Campus students as part of a website class project. Dennis Smith and other FOBCSP volunteer took several of the recent photographs.
